Soil and water conservation engineering is a branch of agriculture science that deals with soil and water conservation principles. We all know that soil and water are the most important natural resources that cannot be replaced. These are essential physical factors for agriculture production. Due to the rapid increase in population, it has become challenging to fulfil the requirement of quality food when our natural resources are degrading.

To address these kinds of challenges, soil and water conservation has been given utmost priority from the conservation point of view. Therefore, soil and water conservation can be referred to as the optimum use and management of water resources and the reduction in soil erosion that helps maintain soil productivity and increase agriculture production.

What is Soil and Water Conservation Engineering?

Engineering in soil and water conservation is a full-time two-year program designed to focus on efficient techniques and methods that can make optimum use of soil and water with the end goal of better soil productivity and reduction in water wastages. The course primarily concentrates on the acquaintance of enrolled students with the advancements in the agriculture sector like applying engineering principles in various agricultural problems such as soil and water management, soil erosion, drainage, soggy field, irrigation & flood control, water resource development with moisture conservation practices.

Since this course imparts a depth understanding of agriculture as well as engineering thus it covers a wide range of topics such as principles and mechanics of soil erosion, water erosion and its control, different agronomical measures, bench terracing, bunding methods, gully erosion, and management, drop and chute spillway, earthen dam, river training, and stream bank protection, and wind erosion. Land use capability classification, topography survey, and watershed modelling are taught in detail to help students solve real-time problems of the agriculture sector.

This program focuses evenly on theoretical and practical aspects of agricultural engineering. During the 2nd year of the program, students are required to complete their dissertation or thesis work, which enables them to get familiar with the on-field problems and find their solutions with the help of engineering concepts.

Eligibility and Career in Soil and Water Conservation Engineering

As mentioned above, it is a full-time two-year post-graduation program that is framed to address soil and water-related agricultural challenges with the help of engineering concepts. The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, are recognised.

To get enrolled in this course, students are required to complete their graduation in agriculture/ engineering or any other relevant discipline with at least 60% marks or equivalent CGPA in aggregate from a recognised college or university. Major entrance examinations like GATE, BITSAT, GGSIPU, IIIT, etc., are conducted for this course. Agriculture is the backbone of our nation, so it has ample opportunities to offer.

After completing this course, the student can quickly get jobs in colleges, universities, private industries, and government organisations. Students can be employed as hydrologists, research officers, soil conservation officers, lecturers, soil scientists, etc. Although salary depends on the nature of the job, an average salary of 3-10 LPA can be estimated.
