About Engineering in Water Technology and Health Science

Water Technology and Health Science deal with improving the quality of life of the human civilisation by preparing the students in water treatment, distribution, innovations in reusing, disposal facilities and monitoring and maintain water quality.  It is a growing field with tremendous growth prospects considering the level of urbanisation and depletion of potable water our world is currently facing.

What is Engineering in Water Technology and Health Science?

Engineering in Water Technology and Health Science is a degree that aims to optimise the innovations in standards of available water. The programme is designed so that the students understand the existing sources of water bodies and the techniques and processes involved in water treatment and conservation of water bodies. Students are also required to learn the basics and essentials of maths and other fields of science that will be used often in water technology. Hydraulics and chemistry are discussed in detail as it finds applications in significant areas of water technology. Students are also taught about the mechanics, distribution, piping, pumps and valves in the water treatment facilities. These include important principles such as cross-connection control. Students are also made aware of the environmental, legal and safety aspects of water technology. The programme aims to make the students aware of the existing environmental laws and the legislative framework our country has imposed for protecting our water bodies. They are also taught the occupational safety principles and also the communication skills required while dealing with situations that may arise in their career later on. Water treatment is a core field of water technology and is an extensively studied subject by researchers worldwide. Water treatment is in demand and is constantly in search of sustainable and profitable innovations at the same time. The course will contain topics on softening water, pH control, and removing metals and metal oxides. This is integrated with chemical equations and calculations, which will be taught early on in the programme. In addition, students are also taught biology and microbiology related to water and water bodies, in general. They are taught about the toxicants present in aquatic systems and how they are systematically removed to support life and render water potable.

Eligibility and Career in Engineering in Water Technology and Health Science

As mentioned above, Engineering in Water Technology and Health Science is a growing field and has enormous growth potential in mid to long term perspectives. There are several career paths one can take, and the job openings are increasing with the increase in demand for experts in water treatment and management. Like every engineering course, engineering in Water Technology and Health Science requires 10+2 Class education from any recognised institution or board. Several postgraduate and PhD programmes are available in the field if one wishes to specialise in water technology and is available in various IITs and NITs. The undergraduate degree lasts for four years. Postgraduation courses in the country last two years, and PhD in IITs and NITs often lasts 3+ years.
