Biomedical Instrumentation is an undergraduate engineering course which covers the designing, repair, maintenance and operation of medical electronic equipment. Also, known as Biomedical and Instrumentation Engineering or Biomedical Engineering, this technical course focuses on how medical electrical equipment can measure physiological data for patients, thereby improving medical care. Being a hands-on program, the course involves training and internships to get a hang of the process related to Biomedical Instrumentation. Students opting for the course are exposed to different areas including biomechanics, electrical safety, computing, engineering and cell biology, data processing, engineering software, and human physiology.

Biomedical Instrumentation

Biomedical Instrumentation is a branch of engineering dealing with the application of the engineering concepts and principles to solve clinical problems in medical care and surgery. With this innovative discipline, the bridge between engineering and medicine can be narrowed down, thus, contributing to healthcare treatment such as monitoring, diagnosis, therapy and others.

How to Join

One who wants to join Biomedical Instrumentation should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top colleges or universities in India.

Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the national level apex authority responsible for the regulation and control of all engineering colleges and courses available in India. AICTE is the statutory authority responsible for proper planning and coordination on the development of the technical education system in India.

Career Prospects

Biomedical Instrumentation is one of the emerging fields of engineering which provides exciting career options. Biomedical Instrumentation engineers can seek employment in several verticals such as biomedical instruments design & manufacturing companies, biomedical research organizations, hospitals, laboratory testing services, quality assurance services, medical institutions and pharmaceutical organizations.
