Food and nutritional biotechnology is a complete two-year master's degree program that aims to improve the quality of agriculture products, processing, packaging, preservation, and post-harvest losses.

ABOUT FOOD AND NUTRITIONAL BIOTECHNOLOGY

By developing diet-based strategies and programs, food and nutritional biotechnology deal with rapidly increasing malnutrition, undernutrition, and overnutrition. It is a growing field that addresses the issue which emerges during the designing of diet programs and functional food-based formulations. Food and nutritional biotechnology is an essential field to provide better health care and soundness of nation. Food and healthy biotechnology work in food safety, nutrigenomics, quality agricultural production, improved post-harvest management, GM crops production, and nutraceuticals for better health.

WHAT IS FOOD AND NUTRITIONAL BIOTECHNOLOGY?

Food and nutritional biotechnology is a complete two-year master's degree program that aims to improve the quality of agriculture products, processing, packaging, preservation, and post-harvest losses. The program is designed to impart lessons related to food chemistry, food safety, and development production. This program helps the student become a skilled food technologist who can adequately function in the sectors such as production, manufacturing of foods, retail, health engineering, agriculture industry, and research. Students are also required to learn the basics and foundation of chemistry, physics, and biology, which help in their food management, food safety, and nutrition sector. Students are also taught about advanced properties of food ingredients, food quality & safety, the metabolic reaction in the human body, food-related ailments, and the impact of fitness on health.

This program aims to make students aware of deficiencies and imbalances in diet that can cause adverse effects on health. During the course, students also explore the areas related to major diseases like cardiovascular diseases, obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, scurvy, psychological problems, and so on. This program trains students to address the growing challenges of preventing and treating such food-related ailments. The course includes topics on food engineering, biochemistry, postharvest technology, food microbiology, rheology & texture analysis, and food physics. This course is integrated with lipid chemistry and technology, meat and marine technology, cold chain management, protein chemistry technology, and handling & storage of food products. They are taught about techniques that can be used to reduce wastages during post-harvesting.

ELIGIBILITY AND CAREER IN FOOD AND NUTRITIONAL BIOTECHNOLOGY

As mentioned above, engineering in food and nutritional biotechnology is a growing field as people are becoming more aware of food quality standards, so demand for food perfectionists is emerging day by day. To take admission in this course, candidates must have physics, chemistry, and maths as the main subjects. Candidates must have passed BE/ B Tech in biotechnology, dairy and food technology, agricultural engineering, food processing, chemical engineering, or relevant issues with an aggregate of 60% marks. Some prestigious institutions select students based on entrance tests such as GATE, TANCET, and UPSEE, followed by interviews and counselling. After completing MTech in food and nutrition biotechnology, students can get their hands on various placements offered by universities. Students can join the private institution as consultants, food production engineers, quality analysts, lab technicians, nutritionists, food technologists, inspectors, lab technicians, and food product development officers. Although the annual salary depends on the designation, the average salary is 1.8 lakh to 10 lakh. It can be expected.
