The primary goal of the Earthquake Engineering course is to design systems that can resist earthquakes. The Seismic Design and Earthquake Engineering course aids in the analysis and design of load-bearing structures. It is a civil engineering sub-discipline. During the course, students will learn about soil mechanics, construction management processes, concrete technology, Applied Construction Project Management, and geology, to name a few topics. Earthquake Engineering is a course that teaches aspirants how to plan, design, construct, and manage earthquake-resistant structures and infrastructures to reduce the risk of earthquakes on buildings. Engineers must build earthquake-resistant buildings because over 60% of the land is earthquake-prone and has varying sensitive zones.

What Is Seismic Design and Earthquake Engineering?

In a major earthquake, an earthquake (or seismic) engineer wants to build structures that will not be damaged by minor shaking and avoid big damage or collapse. Seismic design and Earthquake Engineering is a branch of engineering that aims to reduce the risks posed by earthquakes by achieving two goals: I predict the effects of strong earthquakes on urban areas and civil infrastructures; and ii) designing, building, and maintaining earthquake-resistant structures following building codes. The subjects taught are Seismological Modelling and Simulation, the vibration of the Elastic Method, Numerical Methods for Dynamic Systems, Vulnerability and Risk Analysis, Ground Shaking Hazard, Dissertation, Seismic Evaluation and Retrofitting of Structures, Seismic Disaster Mitigation and Management, Earthquake Precursors and Early Warning Systems and Instrumentation and Model Testing Techniques. The Earthquake Engineering course discusses why seismic design is relevant to students and provides insights into seismic hazards, analysis, structural dynamics, and inelastic behaviour. Engineers would study how previous earthquakes had harmed the structure and then practice creating earthquake-resistant designs. Students learn how to cut expenses, downtime, and casualties by utilizing modern techniques. Structural vibrations sometimes magnify ground vibrations; they know to oppose their constructions.

Eligibility and Career in Seismic Design and Earthquake Engineering

Only Post-Graduate students can enrol in the Seismic Design and Earthquake Engineering course. The following are the prerequisites for admission to various colleges' Earthquake Engineering programs. The candidate must have finished B.Tech with a minimum of 60% overall in the above course. Candidates from the SC/ST groups are awarded a 5% bonus. They should have majored in Electronics/Instrumentation/Biomedical/Electrical/Electrical or a related field. After completing the Seismic Design and Earthquake Engineering course, students can work as volcanologists, petroleum geologists, environmental geologists, Earth Science instructors, glaciologists, Quaternary geologists, structural geologists, and hydrologists.
