It is a combination of Electronics and Instrumentation Engineering, mainly combining the electronics part for sensing with instrumentation engineering. This specialized branch of engineering helps to create, construct and maintain measuring and control devices and systems found in manufacturing plants and research institutions.

Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering

The program combines the academic and motor skills necessary to carve out a career in the field of measurement, electronics with a comprehensive understanding of complex processes. Electronics & Instrumentation Engineers carry out a variety of tasks such as measuring, conducting research, installing, developing, testing, maintaining and designing various instruments used in the industry. Computer-aided processes and automation techniques help engineers to formulate ways to control these systems.

It is mandatory for students to undergo industrial training during their course of study, usually in the last year of the course. Universities also arrange industrial visits, technical seminars and workshops.

How to Join

One who wants to join Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 60-75% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top colleges or universities in India.

Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the national level apex authority responsible for the regulation and control of all engineering colleges and courses available in India. AICTE is the statutory authority responsible for proper planning and coordination on the development of the technical education system in India.

Career Prospects of Electronics & Instrumentation Engineers

B. Tech in Electronics & Instrumentation Engineering is designed to train students in specialized areas of Electronics like Solid-State Circuits, VLSI, Electronic Controls and Communications Engineering including, Multiple Access Technology and Microwave Engineering. The course trains students to develop and implement electronic and electric instruments for monitoring physical phenomena during industrial processes. Professionals in this field get to manufacture chips, cell phones, and other electrical appliances. Successful graduates also have career scopes in several fields including remote sensing, textile and chemical industries, agricultural- based industries and aeronautical areas apart from all the industries in the manufacturing segment.

They are recruited by a variety of industries in the various domain such as Design, Development, Automation, Control, Fabrication, Inspection, Quality Control, Maintenance and Service and so on. They can work in Process Industries (refineries, fertilizers, paper, power plant, food processing, chemical etc.), Process Automation (Emerson), Factory Automation (Hyundai). Besides, they can also go for fields like Avionics (Measurement and Stability), Automobile, Electronics, Biomedical etc. The average salary range for a fresher in this field in India is INR 4-5 lakhs per annum which is proportional to experience and skill set.
