Transportation Engineering course has been introduced to make transportation facilities safer, economic, comfortable, rapid, sustainable and environmentally friendly. This engineering course is a sub-discipline and an integral part of Civil engineering.

Initially, the applications of this course have been included with Civil Engineering, but later the branch has gained huge importance and it began to consider as an area of specialization under the discipline itself. The applications of this course are being applied to various transportation facilities including roads, airports, rail network, port and harbour, etc. It can highly help the economy directly and indirectly.

Transportation Engineering

The course includes main subjects like transport management economics, transportation, and use planning, financial and personnel management, traffic engineering and pavement design. Students who are opting this course should have computer knowledge in areas like CAD in transportation engineering, computer simulation and geographical information systems. The course is considered as an emerging area of technical education which is considered important in infrastructure construction and maintenance.

Over the years, many technological advancements in the field of road construction have happened and in aspects like design, construction, and maintenance has resulted in the importance of this engineering domain.

How to Join

One who wants to join Transportation Engineering should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 60% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top colleges or universities in India.

Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the national level apex authority responsible for the regulation and control of all engineering colleges and courses available in India. AICTE is the statutory authority responsible for proper planning and coordination on the development of the technical education system in India.

Career Prospects of Transportation Engineers

Well-qualified Transportation Engineers are involved in various kind of tasks such as urban planning, travel routes, analysing travel patterns, budgeting, safety evaluation etc. They are also required to make aware the use o urban planning design controls. Most of these graduates get hired as highway engineers who are responsible for planning, designing and constructing roadways, port and railways. They are also required to perform inspections and maintenance works along with these structures and routes ti flag it as safe for travel.

Graduates with great expertise are hired by the PWD, National Highway Authority, Railway, airport authorities etc. They are expected to have undergone various safety, hazard and construction training also.
