Industrial Biotechnology is one of the rapidly growing engineering disciplines which helps the students to become an innovative and successful engineer on a global scale. But when compared to other giants like Mechanical and Civil, Industrial Biotechnology is lesser-known, but it is picking up pace as industries around the world are realizing the importance of Biotechnology now.

It is the applications of biotechnology for industrial purposes, including manufacturing, using as alternative energy and biomaterials. This discipline of engineering is a blend of industrial and pharmaceutical biotechnology.

Industrial Biotechnology Engineering

The aim of this discipline is to make use of the applications of Biotechnology for various industrial applications like manufacturing of new products and materials, to obtain alternative energy and biofuel sources. Industrial Biotechnology is making use of living organisms like bacteria and enzymes for developing useful resources for the industrial sector.

The field of engineering is still undergoing many types of research and studies and if developed to its full potential, it will have a larger impact on a global scale that the applications of biotechnology in other sectors such as healthcare and agriculture. The scope and career opportunities in this course is steadily growing in our country.

Students who are having a passion for science, biology and engineering can opt this course. The government sector is also helping the private sector firms to test the feasibility and process developed in the field of engineering.

How to Join

One who wants to join Industrial Biotechnology Engineering should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 60-75% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top colleges or universities in India.

Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the national level apex authority responsible for the regulation and control of all engineering colleges and courses available in India. AICTE is the statutory authority responsible for proper planning and coordination on the development of the technical education system in India.

Career Prospects

A huge number of companies from around the world are adopting the applications of Biotechnology for the long term sustainability of their products. There is a wide range of field to work with for successful graduates in this discipline and it is increasing by the day. Some of the areas are food, chemical, plastics, polymer, flavour and cosmetics. They are some of the industries which are making use of the applications of Industrial Biotechnology in the first hand. These industries are also at the forefront of hiring well qualified Industrial Biotechnology Engineers. Graduates in this engineering field are also getting paid on an average of Rs 3.4L to 4L per annum.
