How exactly is electricity generated? How is it transmitted to the end users after generation? The applications of Power System Engineering plays a huge role in power generation and distribution. Power System is termed as a network which deals with the aspects of generation, distribution and transmission of electricity. From power plant to circuit breakers, play a vital role in these aspects.

Once electricity is generated in a power plant, it is then transmitted to various substations. And from there is transferred to distribution transformers where they step-down the power to transmit it safely to the end-users. To carry out these tasks, a lot of complex equipment, networks and numerous components are to be dealt with. This is where the knowledge of a specialized Power System Engineer comes in handy.

Power System Engineering

Power System Engineering course is designed to mould skilled and knowledgable professional capable of designing, developing, maintaining and operating complex power system networks. The course covers both theoretical and practical aspects of power system such as dynamics, power system analysis, operations, control, planning, reliability, protection, security and power quality.

The students are taught to get a better understanding and operation of microprocessors and microcontrollers which are a crucial part in evolving the power system technology. The course curriculum familiarizes students with processes of designing, developing, analysing and evaluating high-end power systems for managing a wide variety of projects and research works in the domain.

How to Join

One who wants to join Power System Engineering should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 60-75% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top colleges or universities in India.

Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the national level apex authority responsible for the regulation and control of all engineering colleges and courses available in India. AICTE is the statutory authority responsible for proper planning and coordination on the development of the technical education system in India.

Career Prospects

Defence, heavy electrical industry, automobile, space and power sector are some of the most popular industries and sectors that hire well-qualified graduates in Power System Engineering. Students who are also interested in further studies in the discipline can go for pursuing Masters and PhD in the subject. They can also opt reputed for a teaching career in universities or colleges.
