Machine Design engineering is a post-graduate program which comprises of the essential concepts and various processes involved in the design and manufacturing of machine and machine-related items. This is a branch of Mechanical engineering which mainly focuses on machine design using analytical, numerical and experimental approaches.

Machine Design

The program is a composite of mathematics, kinematics, statics and dynamics, mechanics of materials, material science, engineering and engineering drawing. The course essentially focuses on areas like Theory of Elasticity and Plasticity, Theory of Plates and Shells, Advanced Vibrations, Finite Element Analysis, Kinematics Design, Tribology and Bearing Design, Fracture Mechanics, Experimental Stress Analysis, etc. Students who join this course have the opportunity to work in the areas of design and analysis in coordination with the faculty members on research projects.

Aspirants with good communication skills, research and analytical skills and interest in the field of Machinery and mechanics are ideal for doing this course. Students who are good on their creative side along with a strong aspiration towards machine designing can opt for the program.

Internships

Students who are pursuing the course need to go for the summer internship program as a basic necessity for the successful completion of the course and reception of degrees. The internship would last for 2 months and should be done at a reputed organisation in the relevant department. While some offer stipends, it depends on the concerned organisation policies.

How to Join

One who wants to join Machine Design should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 50% in a respective undergraduate course. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top colleges or universities in India.

Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the national level apex authority responsible for the regulation and control of all engineering colleges and courses available in India. AICTE is the statutory authority responsible for proper planning and coordination on the development of the technical education system in India.

Career Prospects

On completing M. Tech in Machine Design course, students who are interested in further studies can go for pursuing a PhD in the subject. Choosing a teaching career in universities or colleges is also a good option for those who are interested in the academic application of the course. Many universities across the country also offer a dual degree in the course or research. Industries like automobiles, machine tools making, mining companies, space exploration, electronic firms etc. hire post-graduates in Machine Design.
