Mechanical measurement and control is a specialized discipline of engineering and science that deals with the technology used to measure and control the physical and chemical properties of materials with the help of instruments. Human senses are not enough to provide us precise and accurate quantitative information about the events happening in our environment. In measuring and controlling, tools are combined so that measurements provide impulses for remote automatic action. It can also be referred to as the monitoring and operating of technical events and production processes with the help of automated control systems.  Measurement and control enable engineers to test a product on materials for quality control, develop new theories, and discover advanced, efficient components. It aids in monitoring the data in the interest of health and safety.

What is Measurement and Control?

Engineering in (mechanical) measurement and control is a master's degree program of two years intended to equip students with the knowledge of the architecture of the measurement system. It delivers the working principle of a mechanical measurement system. It is designed to impart concepts of mathematical modeling of the control system that helps in analyzing the control system under different time zones. This program creates skillful professionals who can design, plan, install, execute, operate, control, and maintain complicated systems that produce materials. It imparts students with theoretical and practical aspects of measurement and power that are needed in several instrumentation and control industries. In this course, students are exposed to various topics such as fundamentals of measuring and configuration, measuring instruments and their dynamic performance, sources, and elimination of errors, construction of multiple transducers, measurement, and control of different physical entities like temperature, flow, pressure, humidity, stress-strain, speed, acceleration & vibration, displacement with the advanced computational modalities.  Students are taught in-depth knowledge of calibration methodology and error analysis related to measuring instruments to use real-time tools applications. After completing the program, students will be able to select and identify appropriate measuring instruments for specific applications illustrate working principles of measuring instruments.

Eligibility and Career in Measurement and Control

As broached earlier, engineering in measurement and control is a full-time post-graduation program with four semesters recognized by the All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE), New Delhi. Aspiring candidates who are willing to pursue this course must have completed their bachelor's degree in technology or science or any other relevant field with a minimum of 50% marks. Candidate must have qualified GATE or any other entrance exam with a valid score. A qualified professional in this field can be employed in both government and private sectors. Some of the significant government recruiters are ONGC, DRDO, BSNL, etc. Job seekers can apply for a different designation like the regional manager, mechanical design engineer, engineer technologist, researcher, engineering technician, quality controller, and lecturer in universities. An average salary of 3-10 LPA can be expected in starting. Apart from seeking jobs, interested candidates can also pursue further studies like PGDM or MBA, Ph.D., etc.
