The greatest discovery in the field of Power Engineering is at the times of Michael Faraday. According to him, the change in magnetic flux induces an electromotive force in a loop of copper wire, which is called Electromagnetic induction. Since then, power has been proved to become the lifeblood of every organisation and industry in the world. We all know, power is not only required to keep the lights but for all mechanical, electrical and electronic operations. For an effective and efficient generation, delivery, utilization and management of power, it remains as the most challenging process of Electrical Engineering.

Power Engineering

Power Engineering is the perfect blend of economics, electric power and its management. The course makes the students aware of the concepts of power generation, distribution and management. It includes topics on the studies of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics along with concepts of mechanical and computer programming as well.

The main aim of the course is to make the students equipped with practical and theoretical knowledge to meet the growing demand of skilled professionals in Power Engineering in the Indian power sector.

IIT, Delhi, National Power Training Institute, New Delhi, GMR Institute of Technology, BITS, Hyderabad etc. are some of the top engineering institutes in India offering Power Engineering courses.

How to Join

One who wants to join Power Engineering should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 50-60% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top colleges or universities in India.

Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the national level apex authority responsible for the regulation and control of all engineering colleges and courses available in India. AICTE is the statutory authority responsible for proper planning and coordination on the development of the technical education system in India.

Career prospects of Power Engineers

The power sector in India is an emerging economy and is gaining momentum which is creating huge job opportunities for Power Engineering graduates in India. India has huge hydroelectric power potential and the government itself is trying to revive the sector. To find effective solutions for this, the sector is in need of highly qualified Power engineering professionals. Private players are also active in this sector. Reputed Indian companies like DRDO, HAL, DMRC, ISRO, NTPC, Power Grid Corporation, NHPC, Jindal Steel & Power, Reliance Energy, etc. are some of the main recruiters of Power Engineers in India.
