Biotechnology is one of the most important scientific advancements of the past century. It combines mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering and other life sciences to either create a new product or modify an existing one for our needs.

Biotechnology engineering is a 4-year undergraduate degree program which deals with the facts from both biological sciences and technology. In simple terms, Biotechnology engineering is the study that includes the use of living organisms. The students are equipped to use these living organisms to make useful chemical compositions that can be utilized in industries. These products are made useful in areas like agriculture, food sciences and medicine.

Biotechnology Engineering

Biotechnology engineering is a branch of applied biology and chemical engineering standards which makes use of the living organisms in technology, engineering, medicine, and various other useful applications. This branch of engineering also includes genetic engineering and cell/tissue culture technologies. The application of these consolidated technologies includes the domestication of animals, farming and improvements or upgrades through breeding, artificial selection and hybridization.

Students with good practical skills, communication, presentation skills, interpersonal and teamwork skills, professional development skills are the best suit for this course. The course includes complex biological processes and requires critical and analytical skills and independent thinking problem-solving skills.

How to Join

One who wants to join BE Biotechnology Engineering should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 50-60% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top colleges or universities in India.

Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the national level apex authority responsible for the regulation and control of all engineering colleges and courses available in India. AICTE is the statutory authority responsible for proper planning and coordination on the development of the technical education system in India.

Career Prospect of Biotechnology Engineers

The application of biotechnology spreads through various industries like pharmaceuticals, food, chemical, textiles, nutrition, bio-products, medicine, environmental conservation and animal sciences. So there is a big chance to get the most paid and renowned employment opportunity by becoming a biotechnology engineer in India and abroad.

As an emerging developing field, the demand for biotechnical professionals is on the rise worldwide. Those who specialize in this field can get well-reputed job opportunities in the private and public sectors.

Biotech graduates are offered jobs in designing, developing, and operating the process for manufacturing of various high-value biotechnology products such as vaccines, biopharmaceuticals and diagnostic proteins used in animal and human healthcare; enzymes for utilization in foods, detergents and healthcare; fine chemicals, for example, colourants and flavours; and industrial chemicals, biofuels, and bio-plastics such as ethanol. Although more biotechnology graduates are working in the more traditional bio-industry in food processing, paper and pulp, winemaking and leather processing.
