Civil (Structural Engineering) is a sub-course of civil engineering. In this course, the students will be trained to create the structural form of a building.

ABOUT CIVIL (STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING)

Civil (Structural Engineering) is a sub-course of civil engineering. In this course, the students will be trained to create the structural form of a building. A structural engineer must have the capability and skills to calculate and foresee the strength and stability of the building. These skills will be attained through the course of Civil (Structural Engineering). Various other fields like machinery designing, vehicle designing, medical equipment designing also use the minds of the Civil, structural engineers. The theories of the structural engineering course are mainly based on the laws of physics and empirical knowledge, which decides the performance of the structure.

WHAT IS CIVIL (STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING)?

Structural engineers are responsible for engineering, designing, and analyzing the building's structure. As structural engineering is a sub-course of Civil engineering, a student who chooses Structural engineering will also get training for Civil engineering along with their Structural engineer training. There are various tasks a student of Structural engineering has to do. The lessons the students will have to do is:

  • Students have to observe the elements of each structure, determining the pressure and load generated by the influence of humans or the influence of the environment.
  • Students will have to make and design a structure that can resist loads of any type.
  • Doing Mathematical calculations
  • We are using the software, which is a computer assigned for making structural models.
  • Students will have to write reports according to their works and progress.
  • Students have to visit construction sites for checking and analyzing the safety guidelines.

ELIGIBILITY AND CAREER IN CIVIL (STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING)

Even though it is a part of Civil engineering, structural engineering is also a course related to architecture. After graduation, the students can take jobs as structural engineers in various companies. This course is for students interested in joining structural design, safety measures, stability, reliability of the structural form, structural withstanding during seismic forces, etc. In this course, the students will be learning about the construction methods and processes of tall buildings and skyscrapers, bridges, flyovers, dams, and more such structures of the modern world. For a student to be eligible for this course, they should have a bachelor's degree in civil engineering or any equivalent courses like infrastructure engineering, architectural engineering, or construction technology. The admission processes will be: Based on the candidate's GATE exam performance or some institutions/universities conduct their entrance examinations.

For admission, the student will have to do the following steps:

  • The first step is to apply for the GATE examination. The GATE examination is conducted every year in February.
  • Before applying for the GATE examination, the students must make sure that they fulfil all the requirements.
  • After qualifying for the GATE, the students can choose the college they what to go to.
  • If the student's GATE score meets the requirement, then the student will get admission.

After completing the course, the student can take the construction sector as a career option. The construction sector has openings in both private and government, so the graduates can choose the option that suits them. The structural engineering sector is currently growing, and this is the best chance to get in there and make a career. If the student is not interested in joining the structural engineering sector, they can take a doctoral program.
