About Material Science and Chemical Technology

Engineering in materials science and technology is the study of materials and how to use them effectively. Engineering in chemical technology is the study of new elements and how to turn them into valuable products. Chemical technology is the study of elements and how to use them or turn raw materials into valuable products. It combines all the basic principles of chemistry, physics, mathematics, biology, and economics to turn raw material into new efficient products. It is an essential part of essential fields such as nanotechnology, chemical plants, etc.

What is Material Science and Chemical Technology?

Materials science and technology study materials, typically solids and their properties, such as their composition or how their processing will influence their structure. It is a critical element in forensic engineering and failure analysis; how the failure of a component to function caused an accident such as aviation accidents etc. While both of these studies are combined, they can make new products and turn existing products into more efficient and effective ones. While chemical engineering deals with the minute details, materials science deals with the more significant parts. Together it is of utmost importance. For both courses, there are UG and PG programs. For materials science, the UG programs are B.Tech in metallurgical and materials engineering, B.E in metallurgical and materials engineering. The PG programs are M.Tech in material science, M.sc in applied chemistry and materials science, M.Tech in metallurgical and materials engineering. For chemical engineering, the UG programs are Diploma in chemical technology, Diploma in chemical science and technology, Diploma in chemical science and engineering, Diploma in chemical and process engineering, Diploma in plastics technology, Diploma in plastics mould technology, Diploma in polymer technology. All of these are 3-year courses. Now the 4-year courses are B.Tech in chemical science and technology, B.Tech in chemical technology, B.Tech in chemical science and engineering, B.Tech in chemical and process engineering, B.Tech or B.E in polymer science and chemical technology, B.Tech or B.E in polymer technology, B.S in chemical technology. The PG courses which last for 2 years are M.Tech or M.E in Chemical science and technology, M.Tech or M.E in Chemical technology, M.Tech or M.E in Chemical and process engineering, M.Tech or M.E in Polymer science and technology, M.Tech or M.E in Polymer science and chemical technology, M.Tech or M.E in Plastic technology. After this, candidates can do a PhD program.

Eligibility and Career in Material Science and Chemical Technology

For diploma candidates should have passed their 12 in science stream with a minimum of 45% separately for each subject. For UG, candidates should have passed 12 in the science stream and passed JEE or a similar exam. Lateral entry in the second year is also possible. PG candidates must have passed their UG with at least 60% or 6.0 GPA in each subject from an authorized university. For Ph.D. candidates should complete their PG with a separate 55% in their PG exams. Scope and salary of engineering in Materials Science and Chemical Technology After completing the courses, aspirants can join as a biotechnologist, chemical engineer, product/process development scientist, colour technologist, petroleum engineer, materials engineer, metallurgist, research scientist, etc. for all of these jobs, their average salary per annum is in the range of 7 lakhs to 16 lakhs.
