GOVT. ENGINEERING COLLEGE, BARTON HILLThiruvananthapuram
- Government Engineering College, Barton Hill was established by the Government of Kerala in the academic year 1999-2000.
Petroleum Engineering is a field of engineering which deals with the production of hydrocarbons, which can be either natural gas or crude oil, which produces various gases for automobiles and other industrial uses. This field required a detailed understanding of the physical properties of oil, gas and water along with the processes includes in the exploration and processing of crude oils.
Petroleum engineering covers diverse topics including Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Geology, Economics, Thermodynamics and many others. This discipline of engineering overlaps with other major courses in engineering such as mechanical, chemical and civil.
The course is included with designing, developing and maintaining methods to extract oil and gas which are found below the earth’s surface. A petroleum engineer on his course time learns to innovate the processes of extraction like mining, drilling etc. There are two specializations under the Petroleum engineering course, which are Petroleum Upstream and Petroleum Downstream Engineering. Apart from this, Reservoir Engineering, Drilling Engineering and Production Engineering are the three sub-branches of Petroleum Engineering.
Some of the top engineering institutes offering Petroleum Engineering course are IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, ISM Dhanbad, University of Petroleum & Energy Studies Dehradun, MIT Pune, Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT), Rae Bareli, Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (PDPU), Gandhinagar etc.
One who wants to join Petroleum Engineering should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 50-60% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top college or universities in India.
Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.
All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the national level apex authority responsible for the regulation and control of all engineering colleges and courses available in India. AICTE is the statutory authority responsible for proper planning and coordination on the development of the technical education system in India.
The increasing demand for oil all over the world and scarcity of oil well has led to the surge pricing of oil around the world. High oil prices increased the exploration and production of oil, which in return increased the demand for experienced petroleum engineers. One of the main opportunity is working in an oil refinery for a petroleum engineer.
Some of the top recruiters of Petroleum engineers are Reliance Refinery, Essar, Cochin Refinery, etc. and public government enterprises like ONGC and OIL. Apart from job opportunities in India, there are always requirements for Petroleum Engineers in Gulf countries.
Petroleum engineers are one of the top paid engineers among other technical courses. The average salary of a petroleum engineer ranges up to ₹ 8 lakh per year. Experience and knowledge are strong factors which determine your position and pay scale in this job.
