Electrical engineering is a broad field which deals with science and technology involving electricity, electronics, electromagnetism to design, construct and maintain products, services and information systems. Electrical engineering is what is now called electrical, electronics and computer engineering.
This field of engineering covers traditional areas like generation, distribution and transmission of electricity as well as the application of electronics ranging from telecommunications to computers and microprocessors.
Electrical Engineering course
Electrical engineering students are offered both theoretical and practical knowledge in a wide variety of subjects including wireless systems, quantum electronics, modern optics, solid-state materials and devices, power electronics, control theory; signal processing, data compression and communications etc.
A qualifies electrical engineer has the option to select his/her line of work from a range of areas like computers, cell phone, electronic gadgets, radars, navigation systems, power plant, etc.
Almost all engineering colleges in India offers BE/BTech in Electrical engineering. The top electrical engineering colleges in India are the Indian Institutes of Technology, Birla Institute of Technology, National Institutes of Technology, Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), and several other engineering colleges.
How to Join
The basic eligibility criteria to pursue an Electrical Engineering programme at the UG level is to pass the qualifying examination (10+2) from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as main subjects. Besides passing the qualifying examination, the candidate should have secured a minimum aggregate mark of 60% in the said subjects. The Electrical engineering aspirants should possess good analytical, critical, problem-solving skills to get a better understanding of the course at the earliest.
Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.
Career Prospect of Electrical Engineers
Electrical engineering is a booming field and job prospectus of electrical engineers are quite good in India. They are hired to develop, design, manufacture, test, evaluate, market, sell and manage electrical and electronic systems.
Freshers in India are offered jobs in the private and public sectors. The private sector organisation offer a high salary when compared to the government ones. If you are interested in a career which includes research, you can join research labs or institutes and can engage in such jobs. Apart from this, one can go for higher studies and become a professor in college or university as a full time/part-time.
On average, the starting monthly salary of an electrical engineering graduate in India ranges from ₹ 15,000 to ₹ 25,000. However, the pay packages in foreign countries are quite higher as compared to India.
