About Material Science and Engineering

Material science and engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with the study of materials, mainly solids. It may be the study of its molecular structure, how to use it or even the study of its effect in other materials.

What is Material Science and Engineering?

A matter is anything with mass, and that occupies space. It can be in the form of plasma, gas, liquid or solid. Material science studies everything, whether it be already found or newly found; it looks at its nature, chemical effects, and how we can use it. When it comes to material science and engineering, it becomes the study of matters, mainly solids and how we can use them for our use. And they also create new materials. Material science and engineering (MSE) combine engineering, chemistry, and physics to unlock many opportunities by solving many doubts and problems in IT, nanotechnology, biotechnology, and many other disciplines. They investigate materials and studies why they fail to function as the failure of aircraft, power plants etc. And all other branches depend on material science and engineering.

Eligibility and Career in Material Science and Engineering

There are UG and PG programs for material science and engineering. The major UG programs are Bachelor of Technology in metallurgical and materials (B.Tech ) and Bachelor of Engineering in metallurgical engineering and materials ( B.E ). The major PG programs are Master of Technology in material science (M.Tech ), Master of Technology in metallurgical and materials science (M.Tech ), M.Sc in applied chemistry and materials science. Applicants should have completed their 12 in science stream from a recognized board. Their pass mark must be at least 40% in all science subjects and English. Applicants must have a B.Tech or B.E in nanotechnology/chemical engineering/metallurgy/materials science or materials engineering. Applicants should have either B.E, B.Tech or any other equivalent degree with a minimum mark of 55%.  Research scientist (Graphene) – graphene is an essential substance for the scientific world. It is one of the most critical allotropes of carbon. It is always a mystery for the scientific world due to its unique two – dimensional structure. Hence the need for a research scientist for Graphene and compounds similar to it is critical. Biological field - Consists of nanotechnology, biotechnology, biophotonics, biophysics etc. All of these fields can be considered as the science of the future. Besides these materials, scientists, metallurgists and lectures are also career paths for those in this field. For all of these career paths, the average salary per annum is in the range of 4 lakhs to 16 lakhs.
