During the year 1916, the Institution was started under the name and style of the “The Madras Trades School” for imparting Training to apprentices in Mechanical Engineering and Plumbing Trades with an intake of 20 trainees in each course. Gradually, the numbers of courses conducted were increased and also correspondingly admission capacity rose. amil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University was established in 2012 to improve the fisheries sector of Tamil Nadu State. Institute of Fisheries Technology, Nagapattinam was established by Government of Tamil Nadu with a budget provision of Rs.34.08 crore. Subsequently the Institute of Fisheries Technology has been renamed as College of Fisheries Engineering considering the growing importance and emerging needs of fisheries engineering of fisheries engineering sector.
