Geology is the study of the earth's origin, history and composition etc. Its sub-branches are Mineralogy, Structural Geology, Geomorphology, Planetology and Geological Engineering etc.

Applied Geology

The role of a Geologist is very vital in exploring mineral wealth and natural resources. Geologists also determine conditions most suitable for constructing railway lines, roads, bridges, buildings etc.

Geologists also explore under-water resources and gas fields located in the seabed. They conduct tests to measure soil quality by conducting geophysical and geochemical tests.

How to Join

One who wants to join Applied Geology should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 55% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top colleges or universities in India.

Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.

Graduate Aptitude Test (GATE) is the national level entrance examination for admission to postgraduate courses by the IITs and IISc in India. Admission to these institutions is offered based on the score secured in GATE by the candidate.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the national level apex authority responsible for the regulation and control of all engineering colleges and courses available in India. AICTE is the statutory authority responsible for proper planning and coordination on the development of the technical education system in India.

Career Prospects

Geo Professionals are involved in tasks related to exploration and surveys, both indoors (in laboratories and offices) and outdoors (on land or at sea). Some outdoor work may involve very demanding conditions and be located in remote locations.

Mining Geologists often work underground in wet and dirty conditions. For some activities, Geologists are needed to wear protective clothing and safety equipment. Often Geologists spend time away from home, ranging from a few days to several months.
