India is a country which is rich in natural resources, Mineral Engineering is getting wide acceptance among other branches of engineering. The course is focused on interdisciplinary aspects of both sciences and engineering making it one of the unique disciplines in engineering and among the students who are looking for a rewarding career in the Mining and Geology field.

Mineral Engineering

The course focuses mainly on mine-surveying, mechanization techniques in mining, applications of robotics engineering in mining, and emerging fields like mine environment, sustainable mining, mineral quality analytics, India-specific placer deposits, and open cast industrial minerals. Opencast mining includes minerals like coal, aluminium, potash, types of fluorites and other industrial minerals.

The process of mining starts with surveying and finding mineral deposits by geologists and surveyors. Then mining engineers with the help of geologists identify and discover the minerals from mines. After adequate feasibility studies, mining engineers get involved in the process which includes blasting and usage of explosives. The safety and efficiency of the mines are in the hands of efficient mining engineers. They are responsible for deciding and selecting the site of the explosion by ensuring the safety of the environment and everyone associated with the process. Students who are opting this course will be exposed to in-depth knowledge of all the processes associated with mining and all other activities related to it.

The program includes the study of techniques used in the extraction of minerals from natural resources such as energy sources, non-metallic and metallic ores and solid fuels in some cases. It also comprises the process included in mining like blasting, production, processing, drilling, extraction, development and marketing.

How to Join

One who wants to join Signal Processing should pass the qualifying examination with an aggregate score of 50% in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. After completing the same, the student has to appear for the Joint Entrance Exam Main (JEE - Main) to get admission into one of the top colleges or universities in India.

Most of the engineering colleges in India offer admission to students based on the JEE Main examination. It is a national level entrance examination done by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India.

All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) is the national level apex authority responsible for the regulation and control of all engineering colleges and courses available in India. AICTE is the statutory authority responsible for proper planning and coordination on the development of the technical education system in India.

Career Prospects

Global mining enterprises, consultants and service providers, techno-entrepreneurs, techno-economists at mineral sites are some of the recruiters of Mineral Engineering graduates. Their job profile includes responsibilities like developing expertise in reliability engineering, feasibility study on applications of robotics in mining sites, surveying works on complex ore deposits, developing innovative ways in mine-surveying, mine planning and ventilation designing, mineral deposits assessment with the help of computer applications etc. Top recruiting industries of Mineral Engineering graduates are automobile, coal and mining industries (private and public), manufacturing, petrochemical firms, oil and natural gas firms etc.
